Course Schedule and Fees

Grade: 8

Academic Year: 9/16/24 - 4/14/25

Day: wednesday

Time: 7:00-7:45 PM CST

Total # of classes: 22 (excluding holidays, winter break, and spring break)

Course Fees: $180

What will the kids learn?

  •   Reading Comprehension (focus: High School Prep.) 
    • Master reading a prescribed nonfiction book within a given period of time. Speed reading is essential skill for High School. From practice comes perfection . 
    • Form different view points and provide reasoning for your opinion.
    • Share your presentation in a group setting. 


  • Writing
    • Write a summary of the above nonfiction book. 
    • Write a science report based on an experiment conducted for an experiment or science fair.


  • Thematic learning (create a framework before winter break)
    • “Creating a GFL News Report” is the theme. This theme enables students to think, read a variety of materials, follow current events, develop vocabulary,
    • Boost confidence in organization and ownership.
    • Form an editorial board with an advisor (GFL teacher), editor, copy editor, writers, graphic art designer, and sales. Student will brainstorm and decide the roles.


  • Capstone Project ( a three month project starts from January)
    • In a team environment, students will identify a problem or emerging knowledge area, brainstorm, research, and gather information related to the problem or knowledge area and write, and present a project proposal. If time permits, they will be encouraged to implement the project (can be added to their accomplishment for college application) 

Resources & Requirements

  •  One nonfiction book  (parents will buy - total price ~$15 (worth the money)
  • Teacher will provide guidance to the theme project and capstone project though students are expedited to take ownership and responsibility. 
  • GFL will provide a platform for the Newspaper project.
